Although 23,000 women vote for The non-binding referendum question (by a ratio of 25-1), men vote against it by a margin of 187,837 to 108,974. Alice Stone Blackwell notes, “There was the smallest affirmative vote in the most disreputable wards of Boston,” referring to the Irish-Catholic and/or immigrant areas.
